‘Portrait Speaks’ is a two term, teaching pilot programme in portraiture and personal narration for artists of all abilities
• Artists will be introduced to elements of drawing and painting in relation to portraiture, covering techniques, methodologies, use of media and art comprehension. Reference to historic traditions will be made assisting artists to develop a greater appreciation of portraiture as a genre. Ways of presenting ideas and material that are more accessible and able to be comprehended will be developed, so that participants with varied learning requirements can be accommodated – at the same time presenting a robust learning environment that progresses all the artist’s work.
• ‘Portrait Speaks’ will provide a theme and subject matter to explore; it will incorporate personal, symbolic environment. It will provide material and an opportunity to explore self identity and self expression – and metaphoric, symbolic imagery or ways to express personal experience.
This is in keeping with the orientation of Spark Studio’s work which is to combine visual arts learning with self development.
• Throughout the pilot programme we would retain an open dialogue having participants share and feedback information about their personal experience – also presenting their work, speaking on its content and self -critiquing
Public Exhibition and Seminar
The project would culminate in a public exhibition within a community based art gallery ensuring that artists’ works are presented within a professional context. The opening event would include a seminar/ forum presented by the artists speaking on their work, its meaning and intent – and their experience of working within an integrated and inclusive environment. This would provide an interesting platform for discussion and build public and community awareness.
Publication: Exhibition catalogue
A quality catalogue will be produced that documents the process and experience of the artist. This will reflect art works in stages of progression, resolved works, art methodologies and techniques; the content of the works their meaning and purpose; segments of personal narration / prose. It will also record the group dynamic – the experience of the artists working alongside one another in such an environment, and what this experience has brought forth and meant to them personally.
